A few of our events are listed below. To become a member of Chaos and start attending events, please join our Meetup Group!
We'll hike mesa trail starting at a trailhead near NCAR and hike south on the Mesa Trail and back. The difficulty will depend on the conditions, but expect about 4 miles with roughly 700' of elevation. This entire hike will be after sunset—and although it is a full moon, bring a headlamp. This time of year, you will need traction devices such as Micro Spikes or IceTrekkers.
Distance: About 4 miles.
Elevation Gain: 700ish feet
Be on time, we will leave at 6:30 to carpool to the trailhead.
Well behaved dogs are fine.
After the hike we'll head to the Southern Sun for food and drinks.

Join us for a backcountry skiing and ice climbing trip to Ouray, CO over the Presidents Day weekend. The San Juan mountains near Ouray have the most incredible backcountry skiing that I have experienced in Colorado. There are fantastic lines with huge vertical drops through deep champagne powder. The Ice Park in Ouray is an awesome place to climb ice with hundreds of fat lines and is only minutes from town. We can also soak our muscles at night in the famous Ouray Hot Springs and Orvis Hot Springs.
We will drive to Ouray on Friday night, Feb. 17th, stay in Ouray Fri night, Sat, Sun, and then drive home in the late afternoon on Monday, Feb. 20th. Our tentative plan is to backcountry ski on Sat, ice climb on Sun, and backcountry ski on Mon. But people are welcome to ski or ice climb on whatever days they want, or do whatever makes them happy. I have some ice tools and crampons that people can borrow, or you can rent your own gear in Ouray. We can set up multiple ice climbing lines so people can try different routes.
We will pile in some cheap motel rooms in Ouray to keep costs down. I have reserved a room in the Comfort Inn in Ouray with 2 queen beds for $78 a night. I can sleep on the floor and we can put at least 4-5 more people in the room to make it cheap. Maybe someone else can reserve another room to accomodate more people if they sign up. Here is the link:

People are also welcome to get their own lodging if they prefer.
Snowshoers are welcome to join us on the backcountry ski trips. Doggies are welcome too. We will avoid skiing avalanche terrain on the ski trips, so we will try to ski low-angle slopes to minimize avalanche risk. You will want skins if you ski with us.
This meetup is cross-posted with the Meetup group "Spectacular Adventures":

It's probably best to post any comments there.
Lets go ski that deep San Juans powder and climb some fat ice!

CHAOS is an informal, Boulder-based group of energetic, fun, non-competitive, backcountry enthusiasts who are in their 20s, 30s and 40's, and who enjoy self-powered and self-organized activities including hiking, backpacking, biking, snow shoeing, skiing, mountaineering, and river sports. CHAOS' Main Goal is to be a community through which one can make life-long friendships, share backcountry trips, expand outdoor and leadership skills, appreciate nature and enjoy the sense of community, teamwork, and challenge that prospers in backcountry situations.
CHAOS TRIPS - All trips should be for CHAOS by CHAOS, outdoors, and self powered. CHAOS actively encourages its members to organize trips but does not supervise the activities. CHAOS is not a guide service and a person should only go on trips they feel are at their ability level. If you have questions, ask the trip organizer! Many trip organizers love to help out new members and will gladly answer any questions you have about the trip, what equipment to bring, etc. Above all else, have fun and be safe!
Many past and present members believe that CHAOS enormously improved their "young adulthood and pre-family" phase of life. To ensure that this wonderful opportunity remains for future members, they should be in their 20s, 30s or 40's when they join CHAOS. If the members’ ages or the group’s style don’t feel like a good fit for you, we suggest you check out one of the other great clubs in Boulder like the Flatirons Ski Club , the Boulder Outdoor Group , the Colorado Mountain Club , the Boulder Nordic Ski Club , the Sierra Club , or the C.U. Hiking Club (office in UMC).
